The two main differences between youth and normal compound bows are mentioned below.

The weight - Regular bows are lightweight but the youth versions are even more so which makes them easier for kids to carry and hold the correct shooting stance while they are lining up their shot. If the bow was too heavy, it would make it too hard to shoot and would be no fun for the owner.

The draw length - Not only are they lighter but they also need to work within a youngsters arm span. The distance between the bow and the pulling arm is smaller and can be easily adjusted. This also means that they are likely to need to change their bow as they get older as they will usually outgrow it within a couple of years.

Youth compound bows are often used by women who are just starting out in archery too, since the span and weight are much more comfortable. If you are considering a bow as a gift it is a good idea to get a proper fitting done since this can make a huge difference in usability.

Bows will vary greatly between different models and even the slighest change can affect how well it is suited to the archer. This can be the difference from realizing their shooting potential and giving up as they cant hit the target.

As every year turns over into the next, there is a lot to look forward too with the arrivals and announcements of new and improved kit. It's the same in any field, not just with compound bows.

Of course, you can expect that most manufacturers will be releasing new versions of ageing compound bows as well as releasing brand new models with the latest patented technology. Some of these are already known about and have been announced since last year in industry news and magazines. However, many of them would also have been kept under wraps until later on in the year and its these that will probably be of interested to most people.

It's impossible to predict just what new gadgets and improvements might have been announced, but for now, theres a couple of compound bows you might want to consider;

This helps to give it balance and strength. Continue Reading

Once you have gotten used to shooting a compound bow, wether it is for archery or hunting, you will want to look at what optional extras your bow supports. Generally speaking these are aids that will help you be more accurate with your shots.

Just like used compound bows, you can buy second hand stabilizers as they dont generally deteriorate with use.

These stabilizers will lead to the most noticeable improvement in your shooting. You have probably seen other people use them and they are the bar that sticks off the front of the bow. Originally, these were tubes made out of metal but nowadays it is more common to see carbon tubes instead.

There are 2 main benefits to using one;

When aiming you will be steadier because they act as a counter weight.

Carbon of course is somewhat lighter than metal. This makes it easier to hold your stance while not tiring your shooting arm. The stabilizer does have a weight at the end, which is how it keeps the bow steady. Due to the kinetic energy and rythmic flow involved, this allows the arrow to follow a straight path. This means your shots will be more accurate. It also means you can reproduce the same shot over and over again.

It also reduces the amount of vibrations caused by shooting

The stabilizer will also reduce the amount of vibration caused when you release the arrow through dampeners. It is true that this is unlikely to affect your performance directly, but it results in a quieter bow and you will not notice the vibrations as much on your shooting arm.

The above should highlight that a compound bow stabilizer can be a great addition. If you are a targer shooter, then you will want to get a longer one because they keep the bow more steady than the shorter versions which are typically used for hunting.

If you are looking at used compound bows then you might find that it comes with a range of accessories such as a stabilizer or bow quivers so be sure to check the item specifics. You usually have to pay extra if you are buying it new.

It is important to know the correct draw length you need in order to shoot a compound bow effectively. This is typically about the same length of arrow you use but since this will vary from person to person there are more accurate ways of measuring it.

You should however bear in mind that it is also important to feel comfortable with your setup; while this will let you know what draw length you should probably be using, you might have to make slight adjustments. The draw length can be altered on most compound bows and if you are looking at buying used compound bows then you will almost certainly need to do this.

Here are three ways you can measure the correct draw length;

The easiest, but probably the most inaccurate is to take your height and divide it by 2.5. The number you are left with is the approximate draw length you need. The reason this may be inaccurate is because it assumes your arm span is the same as your height. Of course, everyone is different so for some this may not be true.

Another way is to hold your fist out in front of you, facing forward and measure the distance from the front of your fist to your mouth. The measurement is your likely draw length because this is how you would be holding a bow. A downside to this is that it assumes you are in a proper stance to beginners might have skewed results.

Finally, and based on the first method, a much more accurate way of measuring the draw length is open your arms out, held at shoulder length with your fingers pointing outwards. Have someone measure the distance between the tips of the two middle fingers. Once again, this measurement should be divided by 2.5. As this caters for differences in arm spans it is much more preferable to the above, although you will need a second person present.

These are 3 ways that you can use to measure your draw length. It helps to understand all of them because yhey all have their advantages. If in doubt, you can always get measured at an archery store who will be able to advise and guide you further. You can use these if you are looking at used compound bows or even if you are buying brand new. You should try to avoid changing your draw length to often as you will will be able to adjust your shots much more precisely once you have established a good contact point.

If you are into hunting or archery, you should know how to choose the right supplies and equipment for this kind of sport.

It is more difficult to buy archery or hunting supplies because it is not a very popular sport like basketball or football and the equipment requires some kind of permit before you can actually buy them.

Bows and arrows are commonly used in archery or hunting. These supplies are always used in archery and sometimes in hunting because some people prefer to use guns in game hunting. But whether you are hunting or playing archery, you should consider choosing the right kind of bow. Compound bows are used by many people.

If you decide to use compound bows, you also need to buy compound bow arrows. You need to know a few things before you buy compound bow arrows such as the ones listed below.

You can buy compound bow arrows from shops that sell hunting or archery supplies or online. It might be a bit more difficult to find these shops compared to shops that sell equipment for more popular sports like basketball or football. And when you find a shop that sells these supplies, be sure to visit the shop and observe the different kinds of supplies and equipments used in archery or hunting. It would not also hurt to befriend the store staff or owner to learn more about archery and hunting equipment and supplies.

You should determine the kind of compound bow that you have. Is it a compound bow for men, women, or youth? These compound bows have slight differences in terms of draw weight, draw length, and other factors because men, women, and youth have different needs. Choose the arrows that work for the kind of compound bow that you have.

It is also important to remember that an expensive arrow automatically translates to high quality and good performance. Your performance depends on your skills as a hunter or archer and your bow and arrows, not on the price. You can get high quality compound bow arrows for a low price if you know how and where to look.

Archery is a sport that not many people play but when you get your hands on a set of bow and arrows and you start to shoot a target, you will find it very exciting and challenging.

Just like playing other types of sports, it is also important to be knowledgeable about the game. You should know the basic rules of the game and how the sport works. You should also make sure that you are using good quality archery supplies and equipment to help you advance in the game.

There are several different kinds of bows and arrows used in archery but some people prefer to use compound bows and their special arrows. Of course, you need to buy special arrows for compound bows to be able to use the bow efficiently. There are a few things that you should know when you look for arrows for compound bows. Here are some considerations.

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced archery player, you should know that your arrows should be straight. Be sure to check the arrow for some curves or bumps. These minor defects can affect your arrows’ performance. If the arrows are not straight, you would not be able to hit the target. Or worse, you might accidentally hit something or someone that could result to damage or injury.

You should also check the material used for making the arrows. Arrows for compound bows are made using different kinds of materials. Wood, fibreglass, aluminium, and carbon are some of the most commonly used materials for making arrows. These materials have their won features and benefits. For instance, aluminium and carbon arrows are lighter than wood or fibreglass. Fibreglass is a bit heavy but they are more durable than the others. In choosing the right material, you should first consider your needs in archery.

Like what was mentioned, you should know your needs as an archer. Players who compete in archery competitions use a different kind of arrows compared to players who are still training. You should pick the right arrows depending on your purpose of playing archery.

Another popular question recently is how to shoot a compound bow without using a sight, or even if it is possible. Its not as straight forward as you might think. This guide sorts it out once and for all.

The simple answer is: Yes. You can.

[Ed: But you may find yourself tire quicker if you dont use a sight!]

However, in more depth, it depends on the circumstances. If you are aiming to shoot competitively then it depends on the tournament, the NFAA rules are quite strict on this matter.

If you are shooting a compound bow barebow style then the chances are you will not get away with using a sight anyway, so this is worth considering. If you can get more used to the bow without a sight then you are going to be a much more natural shooter than someone who has learnt only to use one.

With a sight, the arrow does not sit on your finger but on the sight itself. This may have some benefits it a tournament allows it but a lot of archers and of course hunters much prefer to not use one since it means the experience is much more solid.

Consider this; if you practice day in, day out with a sight and then try to shoot at a random distance, you will find it very, very hard to actually hit the target. However, if you practiced without using a sight then you would probably have a better gauge on the distance.

Tools and gadgets are all very well, but you shouldnt look at using something just because joe random does. Instead, consider what you want out of your sport or hobby. If you want to use a sight, then remember that you can almost always hit a static, same distance target better than an instict shooter. However, you may have to suffer if the distance changes just a few metres. There are pros and cons to any sport - know your limitations.

This might sound a little odd, but it is quite an popular question it seems. This guide is the definitive source on how to install a peep sight on a compound bow string without using a bow press.

The answer is: DONT.

The main reason for not doing this is because the bow holds so much energy that if you try to tamper with it, you are almost certainly going to end up injuring yourself or someone else for that matter. The number one rule for archery is safety first, and this applies to shooting as well as maintenance.

The bow press is designed to do a specific job, so let it do that. If you really need it fitted then take it to an archery store who will do it for you, and in most cases this will be quite cheap - sometimes as little as $10.

Another reason not to do this yourself is that you cant calibrate if properly. If you own a compound bow then you are serious about your archery or hunting. Either way, trying to find some way for a peep sight to be installed on a compound bow string without a bow press is asking for trouble. If it is not attached properly you may find when the string tenses the peep leans either side - just 1mm can make a huge difference on wether you hit the target or not.

If you are serious about gettig the most out of your compound bow, a small investment will allow a professional to install the peep sight for you. If you dont have the money, then be sure to save up and consider it a worthy investment. After all, you may not be able to shoot if you end up losing an eye!

Compound bows help an archer or hunter aim better and shoot straighter. They are different from long bows and recurve bows since both the long bow and the recurve bow have limbs that are flexible. They stretch back when the bow string is pulled. The tension that your hand has to overcome increases uniformly as the string is pulled back.

However with the compound bow, the limbs do not stretch backwards. The limbs are rigid and not flexible. However the string is drawn back using a system of pulleys. As you pull the compound bow string back, the tension is high. But once you pull back a certain amount of the string, the tension reduces drastically. This allows the archer to aim easier with the tension not affecting his hand. He can hold the hand steady and thus the bow steady too.

Sometimes your arrows might not be accurate as you want them to be and shots might be veer off target repeatedly. You might be doing everything right, but they still might just not be accurate enough. Sometimes arrows go off target too. The first thing to check is your stance and other basics. Are you doing everything you should be? Some times you might be doing everything right and the arrows might still be veering off. The answer would be to tune your bow. Tuning the bow helps to adjust the bow perfectly and shoot the arrow directly at the target.

In this article, we shed some light on the right procedure to tune the compound bow. Place the arrow in such a way that resting point of the arrow is at level with the bottom of the bolt hole to which the rest is attached to. The resting point might be top of the prongs, whisker biscuit or any such device. Use the bow square and keep the nocking point one-eighth to one-fourth above the level. The arrow is perfectly placed horizontally. Align the arrow vertically using any method. Your eyes serve the purpose well enough. Set the arrow straight vertically.
Next, the peep sight needs to be installed. Close your eyes and pull the string back in a swift and fluid motion. Open the eye with which you aim. This is where the peep sight ought to be. Next is the paper test. In a frame, place a piece of paper at about ten yards. Put a back stop behind it. Shoot an arrow through this from a distance of around ten yards. Inspect the holes. If there is a right tear or a left tear, adjust the arrow rest in the along the direction of the tear. These adjustments must be done in terms of one-sixteenth. At the right point, when the bow is perfectly tuned, you obtain bullet holes with no tears. There might be tears in the vertical direction too. You will have to adjust the nock point in similar one-sixteenth adjustments. Once bullet holes are obtained, set the sight pins.

Remember, this is your bow and you shoot with it. Go through a lot of trial and error and decide on the best and most comfortable tuning. You should be comfortable with your bow.

A compound bow is different from a recurve bow or a long bow. The compound bow does not have flexible arms like the recurve or longbow. The compound bow has rigid and fixed arms. These arms do not move back.

A compound bow is different from a recurve bow or a long bow. The compound bow does not have flexible arms like the recurve or longbow. The compound bow has rigid and fixed arms. These arms do not move back.

The compound bow uses pulleys to facilitate the bow string being pulled back. The compound bow also has a unique fact or characteristic. It is known as Let off. The bowstring when sufficiently pulled back loses some of its tension and the amount of tension needed to keep the string pulled back reduces drastically. This helps the archer aim straighter and easier. This characteristic drastically reduces the holding weight of a bow. The stance and position assumed by the archer remains the same for a compound bow as the other bows.

To shoot a compound bow, first assume an easy and relaxed stance. Choose an open stance for more comfort and efficiency. Next attach the release to the string. If you have a loop, it is even better. Attach the release to the loop.

Once this is done place your hand in the grip. Take care to ensure that the pressure point is at the thick part of your thumb. After release, the pressure should go directly into your bow arm. Try and keep the bow arm as relaxed as possible. The bow should not be gripped by your bow arm fingers. A finger sling or a bow sling will help with keeping your hand relaxed. A relaxed arm will not twitch or shake. There should be no shake or twitch after the release.

Next step is to lift the bow and point it to the target. Do not lift the bow above the target. This is a practice common with recurve bow archers. They do this to gain extra leverage. However with the compound bow, this should be avoided. The idea of pointing it above the target is to get extra leverage in a recurve bow. However this is not possible in a compound bow. Even in the event of a misfire, the arrow must stay in the shooting area. Just lift the bow with your bow arm and let it find a natural and comfortable position. Do no pull it back or rotate it. Try and rest it at a comfortable position. Practise drawing the bow string to acclimatise your muscles with the weight and tension of the bow string. However dry firing is not advised. Practice on a free string.
The next step is to draw the string. Draw the string with your back muscles and not your arm muscles. The draw should a clean and straight motion. The draw length is best decided in consultation with an experienced archer or a coach.

The next important point is the anchor. A low anchor below your jaw bone is preferred. Try and draw the string to your nose. It helps in maintain the arrow in a straight line. The brain automatically focuses on the centre of the target. As you practice, over time you will become quite accurate at shooting a compound bow and may decide you are ready for hunting!
